Wood grille ceilings: solid, laminated and veneered options
The differences between solid, laminated and veneered wood grille ceilings, and which material suits which kind of space.

A wood grille ceiling is made of parallel timber slats. The gaps between the slats conceal what is above while giving the surface rhythm and depth. The warmth of wood balances spaces dominated by cooler materials such as stone, glass and metal.
Ceilüx offers wood grille ceilings in solid, laminated and veneered options. All three look like wood; the differences lie in construction, stability and installation conditions.
Solid timber
A solid slat is made from a single piece of timber. The grain continues on every face, so the edges and ends also read as real wood.
- It gives the strongest natural look.
- Because wood is a natural material, it can respond to changes in humidity and temperature, so site conditions should be assessed beforehand.
Laminated timber
A laminated slat is made by bonding layers of timber. The layered structure helps the slat stay more stable against deformation.
- It is preferred for long runs and ceilings where straight lines matter.
- It keeps the character of timber.
Veneer
With veneer, a timber veneer is applied to the surface of a core. The visible face shows real wood texture while the core can be made from a different material.
- It offers flexibility in species and colour.
- It helps achieve a consistent look across large areas.
Which option for which space?
The right choice depends on how the space is used, the ceiling height, the climate control conditions and the desired look. For a glazed entrance hall, a restaurant or an office floor, the best material is chosen during the site survey by assessing these conditions together.
Design and installation
Slat spacing, direction and the relationship with light define the character of the ceiling; we cover this in rhythm in wood ceilings. For installation and care, see what to consider when installing a wood ceiling.
