What is a perforated LED ceiling? Light from the ceiling itself

A perforated LED ceiling lights a space through perforated aluminium panels with LEDs behind them. Where it is used and how to choose one.

In lobbies, waiting lounges and open office floors, the ceiling is often treated as a surface that simply carries light fittings. A perforated LED ceiling reverses that idea: the light comes from the ceiling surface itself, not from separate fittings attached to it.

How does a perforated LED ceiling work?

The system is based on aluminium panels with a regular perforation pattern. LED lighting placed behind the panels shines through the perforations and creates a point-light texture across the ceiling. From a distance, the ceiling reads as a soft, continuous light surface; up close, the perforation pattern becomes visible.

Ceilüx perforated panels are made in 60×120 cm and 120×120 cm sizes. Panels can be finished in any RAL colour, so the ceiling follows the colour palette of the space.

Where is it used?

A perforated LED ceiling is chosen where the ceiling should stand out as an architectural element:

  • Hotel and residence lobbies
  • Lift lobbies and circulation areas
  • Waiting lounges and reception areas
  • Glazed halls and large office floors

In these spaces, the ceiling is one of the first surfaces a visitor notices. Spreading the light across the whole ceiling gives a more even sense of brightness and reduces the clutter of individual fittings.

With LED or with acoustic felt

Not every perforated ceiling needs to be lit. Ceilüx supplies perforated panels with LED or with acoustic felt. In panels without LED, the felt behind the perforations absorbs sound and helps reduce echo. One ceiling can combine lit zones and acoustic zones. We cover the acoustic side in acoustics of perforated ceilings.

What to consider when choosing

  1. Panel size: The grid of the space and the ceiling height determine whether 60×120 or 120×120 fits better.
  2. Colour: The RAL choice defines how the ceiling looks when the lights are off.
  3. Light and acoustics: Which zones are lit and which are acoustic is planned during the site survey.
  4. Maintenance and access: You will need to reach the ceiling void later. In the Ceilüx system, the plenum can be accessed through every panel; see ceiling access and maintenance.

Summary

A perforated LED ceiling makes lighting part of the ceiling. With the right size, colour and lighting plan, the ceiling becomes both functional and a defining surface of the space. To plan the right layout for your project, you can request a site survey.
