Acoustics of perforated ceilings: perforation, felt and quieter spaces

Perforated panels with acoustic felt help reduce echo. How perforation works acoustically and what to consider when planning a ceiling.

In spaces with many hard surfaces, sound reflects off walls, floors and ceilings. When glass facades, stone floors and flat ceilings come together, conversations blur into each other and a room feels busier than it is. As the largest continuous surface in most rooms, the ceiling plays an important role in acoustics.

How do perforated panels affect sound?

A plain metal panel reflects most of the sound back into the room. With a perforated panel, part of the sound passes through the perforations into the void behind the panel. When that void holds acoustic felt, part of the sound energy is absorbed and less of it is reflected back.

So the acoustic effect of a perforated panel does not come from the perforations alone, but from the perforations and the felt behind them working together.

Acoustics in Ceilüx perforated panels

Ceilüx perforated panels come with LED or with acoustic felt. In panels without LED, the felt behind the panel provides the acoustic performance. This makes it possible to keep one visual language while using part of the ceiling for light and part of it for sound control.

In a lobby, for example:

  • the entrance and reception zone can use lit perforated panels,
  • the seating and waiting zone can use acoustic perforated panels with felt.

Because both zones share the same perforation pattern and colour, the ceiling stays visually continuous.

What to consider when planning

  1. How the space is used: Meeting, waiting, dining and circulation areas have different acoustic expectations.
  2. Other surfaces: The more glass, stone and concrete a space has, the more the ceiling matters acoustically.
  3. Lighting needs: Lit and acoustic zones should be planned together.
  4. Measurement and calculation: Target acoustic values are set by a project-specific calculation, and products should be chosen accordingly.

Acoustics and access together

Since the felt sits behind the panel, it matters that panels can be opened easily for maintenance. In the Ceilüx system, the plenum can be reached through every panel, and panels can be removed and reinstalled. See ceiling access and maintenance.

Summary

With the right felt and the right zoning, a perforated ceiling works for both light and sound. To assess the acoustic and lighting needs of your project together, you can request a site survey. For the general features, read what is a perforated LED ceiling.
