Choosing a felt ceiling: colour, layout and existing spaces

When choosing a felt ceiling, colour, layout and the current condition of the space are assessed together. The key points for the right choice.

Acoustic felt ceiling in an office

A felt ceiling is both an acoustic and a visual decision. To choose well, the acoustic need, the design language of the space and the existing conditions should be assessed together.

Colour

Felt panels directly shape how the ceiling looks:

  • Neutral tones (grey, beige, off-white) give a calm, long-lasting look and work easily with different furniture and materials.
  • Dark tones visually push the ceiling back and can help the services in the void recede.
  • Corporate or vivid colours give a space identity and can be used to separate zones.

Colour should be chosen from a physical sample under the lighting conditions of the space.

Layout

A felt ceiling does not need to cover the whole surface. The layout follows the acoustic need and the design concept:

  • Full coverage: the highest acoustic contribution and a calm, continuous look.
  • Zoned application: concentrated above specific areas such as workstations, meeting tables or waiting areas.
  • With other systems: planned together with perforated, wood or linear ceilings in the same space.

Existing spaces

In refurbishment projects, the relationship between the felt ceiling and the existing ceiling matters. The condition of the existing ceiling, the services in the void and the positions of lighting and ventilation are inspected during the site survey, and the installation method is chosen accordingly.

Coordinating lighting and services

Felt panels are laid out together with light fittings, ventilation grilles and sprinkler heads. When these positions are set at design stage, the ceiling looks more orderly and later cutting is reduced.

Care

Care recommendations specific to the installed product are shared at handover. Ceilüx trains the technical team at handover, and technical support is available afterwards.

Summary

When colour, layout and existing conditions are assessed together, a felt ceiling improves both the sound and the look of a space. For the general features, read what is a felt ceiling; for offices, read echo in offices and felt panels. You can request a site survey for your project.
